In Cameroon, as elsewhere, getting into a VTC without checking basic information exposes you to avoidable risks. Whether for a short trip in Douala, Yaoundé, or elsewhere, taking a few seconds to confirm the driver's identity and the vehicle's condition can spare you from hassle or even dangerous situations.
Why Bother Checking?
Checking isn't about paranoia—it's common sense. It allows you to:
- Make sure the right person is behind the wheel—the one assigned to your ride.
- Verify that the vehicle matches the description provided at booking (make, model, color, license plate).
- Ensure the vehicle is in good shape for a safe and comfortable journey.
How to Check Effectively
1. Compare the Information in the App
Before you get in, review your ride details in the VORIK app: driver's name, photo, license plate, make and model. Take a moment to compare them with what you see in front of you. If anything doesn't match, don't get in—report it instead.
2. Inspect the Vehicle
Walk around the vehicle if possible. Check the general condition: tires, bodywork, windows, lights. A vehicle that looks damaged or neglected could be a safety concern. Also, make sure the license plate matches the one shown in the app.
3. Verify the Driver's Identity
Don't rely solely on the photo. Politely ask the driver to confirm their name and, if you have any doubt, request to see an ID. In some cases, the app may display a license number or other details—use them to cross-check.
When in Doubt, Don't Ride
If you have any hesitation about the driver or the vehicle, it's best to refuse the ride. You can cancel and book a new one through the app. Reporting an issue contributes to better safety for everyone.
Make It a Habit
Don't treat this check as optional. Make it a routine for every ride, even when you're in a hurry. It takes only a few seconds and can save you a lot of trouble. Your safety is a priority, and this small habit is part of it.
